Abstract: | While organizations have for decades been rewarded for consolidating around standard IT processes and for stockpiling assets, nowadays flexibility on operation and business models is becoming a key differentiator in particular in IT-supported business processes. Operations are no longer assumed to be confined within organizational boundaries but more and more often involve short-term collaboration with frequently changing external partners in broader ecosystems. Organizations are focusing on key competencies, split up value creation chains across several organizations and demand for higher agility and flexibility of their IT systems. Flexible and adaptable IT systems contribute considerably to companies'' competitiveness. Modern enterprises are thus demanding for effective and efficient ways to share and consume IT services and resources across companies'' boundaries. The key concepts are business service decomposition and recomposition from distributed IT services that are based on loosely coupled architecture paradigms and the separation of business architectures from involved IT services and data. The need for tight integration of cross-organizational value chains, accompanied by an increasing pressure to align IT systems and make them interoperable with infrastructures of partnering organizations is rapidly increasing as organizations'' boundaries are becoming fluid and permeable. Addressing these challenges, this book explores, designs and implements a mediating infrastructure that helps organizations preparing their IT systems for rapidly supplying and obtaining electronic services from short-term partnering organizations. This openness poses intense demands on authorization and access control procedures that are dealt with by the proposed access control infrastructure. The distributed infrastructure blends well with the proposed dynamic service selection and sourcing approach. As a whole, the proposal allows organizations to think about their operations as collections of services that are dynamically sourced at the time of need. |
