In this dissertation for a PhD in development studies at the Institute of Social Studies at The Hague, The Netherlands, Obo examines microfinance institutions in his native Ethiopia. In particular, he assesses their operational and financial sustainability and their volume of operation; analyzes the scale and depth of the program outreach and relations with clients; evaluates institutional viability in terms of ownership, governance structure, institutional design and resources, and management of financial information systems; and assesses the impact of the regulatory and other financial policies of the government.
