Optimization of Multicarrier Data Transmission over Wireline and Optical Media for a Novel Industrial Fieldbus
Today's fieldbus systems face demanding requirements. Particularly in the low-level industrial field where data between sensors and actuators is exchanged, very short response times are required for a multitude of subscribers which also demand an ever increasing data rate. As current fieldbus systems operate at their performance limit, new communication architectures are essentially required which employ advanced modulation and coding techniques.

This thesis describes a novel system architecture for an industrial fieldbus based on multicarrier principles which are shown to be very flexible regarding the stringent requirements imposed by factory automation. Besides, we address algorithms which enhance system performance by mitigating impulse noise for example. In addition, we present a rigorous noise analysis of the developed fieldbus in multiple access scenarios and derive optimization strategies which increase the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and yield fairness between subscribers. For some applications, an optical transmission, which demands unipolar transmit signals, is beneficial. Thus, we present and thoroughly analyze various transmission techniques for unipolar multicarrier modulation. Although the novel fieldbus is primarily designed for wireline networks only minor changes are required to adapt it for an optical channel. In conclusion, we introduce and analyze electronic circuits performing the electro-optical conversion.
