Recent advances in VEP-based BCI systems
This book focuses on the rapid evolution of modern technologies known as Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs). BCI is based on the analysis and decoding of brain activity to provide a non-muscular channel for sending messages and commands to the external world. A few decades ago, BCI emerged as a new communication pathway allowing subjects with severe neuromuscular disorders, or complete paralysis to communicate and interact with the outside world. Recently, it has also been used in entirely different areas, as e.g. entertainment.
The BCIs based on visual evoked potentials (VEPs) have an enhanced capability and accuracy for high-speed human-machine interaction. This BCI paradigm has undergone several advancements ranging from the Steady State Visual Evoked Potentials (SSVEP) also called f-VEP, to recent models of code-modulated Visual Evoked Potentials (c-VEP). The SSVEP flickers with a unique constant frequency, while the c-VEP is a visual stimulus pseudorandom swapping of orthogonal patterns. Other advanced variants of VEP are motion-onset visual evoked potentials (mVEPs), and flicker free steady-state motion visual evoked potentials (FF-SSMVEPs), etc.
This book further intends to show the last research advances in VEP-based BCIs, their modern application based on this BCI technique, and their innovative signal processing algorithms. The BCI systems aim at improving the convenience and ease of use, particularly for people with disabilities.
