Abstract: | Day in day out, across the globe, numerous communities are facing natural and human made disasters. Thus, in our age, to minimize the disaster caused losses and especially to save lives, disaster prediction studies and early warning systems have gained great importance. From past to present, the city of Zonguldak, Turkey has been experiencing vertical ground movement due to underground coal mining activities. In spite of these known vertical ground movements, not only have underground coal mining activities expanded under the communities but also the city itself has grown bigger towards these mining zones. Because of these unplanned acitivites, time to time, damages have been experienced in historical and engineering structures in the city. When this situation is combined with irregular topography and geological structure, a most likely disaster threat emerges for the city.
In this study, firstly, ground movements determined in the study area and elements that might trigger these movements and estimated vertical motion calculations possibly caused by mining activites are examined. Secondly, seismic tomography study and its geophysical interpretation are given. Lastly, by looking through geotechnical and structural engineering windows, a series of solutions are provided. |
