We will give your open access publication an ISBN and a DOI number to ensure clear identification and optimal findability. Our services include:
Funding programs
Today, there are a variety of funding programs to promote open access publications. Many universities have their own funds for this purpose and also through the EU, the German Research Foundation (DFG), the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and various foundations, such as the Volkswagen Foundation (VW) funding is possible.
DFG funding
Funding can be applied for for open access monographs or open access books, for publications that can be proven to arise from a DFG project and for which the author is employed at the applying institution. You can apply for up to 5,000 euros per title for the publication of open access books. Anthologies also count as open access books, provided that no other funding is provided for these publications. Please contact the DFG for detailed information:
BMBF funding
Funding can only be applied for open access publications of research results from a completed BMBF-funded project. Full funding for publication expenses can be provided up to an amount of 2,000 euros (net) per publication (fixed-amount project funding). If the publication expenses amount to more than 2,000 euros (net), an additional 20% of the additional amount can be funded. The maximum funding amount per publication is 2,400 euros (net). Applications can be submitted by both research institutions and authors. Please inform yourself in detail:
Publishing contract
A publishing contract is concluded with the author for the open access publication (sample contract for open access publication).
VG Wort remuneration
The special distribution applies to your Open Access publication.
Reporting is only possible in electronic form via T.O.M., VG WORT's online reporting portal. A one-time registration is required for access. Reporting via paper forms cannot be made.
The reporting deadline ends on January 31st of each year for texts that were available on the Internet in the previous year.
Print version
For all Open Access publications we offer the option of publishing a printed edition. This appears under its own ISBN and is available in bookstores and via our online catalog. The print version increases the availability and distribution of the work. If you choose the additional print version, we will provide 10 specimen copies. You also participate in sales through the author's fee.
The advantages
Our innovative publishing concept is characterized by short production times combined with high adherence to deadlines. The time from contact to publication is usually only a few weeks. Our efficient internal processes lead to affordable publication costs, which ideally are fully covered by the available funding. We publish monographs, dissertations, research reports and conference proceedings as open access publications.
Create file templates
To create a PDF file, you need the program Acrobat Professional or a comparable free program such as FreePDF or PDFCreator.
If you use the Acrobat Professional program, select the Adobe PDF printer from the printer menu in your word processor to create the PDF file. The "Properties" option takes you to the next menu field. There you set the default setting to “Press Quality” or “high-quality printing”. The “None” option must be selected for Adobe PDF security. Regardless of the final format, set the paper size to DIN A4 and select 600 dpi in the “Print quality” option. The scaling should be changed according to the final format:
Format DIN A4 = 100%
Format B5 = 80%
Format DIN A5 = 70%
Finally, select “Load to printer as soft font” under the TrueType font option. You can leave all other settings as they are. Then confirm the settings you have made with OK and enter the desired storage location and file name. You will then receive a PDF file.
When using other PDF programs, please make sure that all fonts are embedded and that the print quality is high.
Please note that we cannot make any changes or corrections to the PDF file. Please check the formatting again after creating the PDF file.
If you have any further questions, please contact our technical support.
Typesetting & Layout
When typesetting your publication, our tasks include selecting professional typography as well as an attractive font and size. Sufficient margins and the congruence of the lines, guaranteed by the use of a baseline grid, complete the typesetting. We also check the quality of existing images and can optimize them if necessary. Correct page numbers and a structured table of contents are often unpleasant tasks when writing a manuscript - so we are happy to take on this work for you.
Cover design
Our graphics department creates an individual cover design according to your wishes. Please provide us with a draft or description of your desired design. If university or institute logos are to be used for the cover, the universities' terms of use must be taken into account. Editing the cover by our graphics department guarantees you an attractive design, in which the color, font and image selection can also be designed to match the theme. If desired, we can research images ourselves or check existing images and graphics for quality

Publication request
You can submit your publication using your personal account and communicate easily and efficiently with the responsible editorial team. If you would like to submit a non-binding publication request in advance, please use the input fields below.
Please inform us about the most important key data of your publication. To do this, please fill out this form so that we can send you detailed information.
Formatting
If the typesetting work for the publication is not carried out by us, we need a print-ready, typesetting-ready file in PDF format and, if possible, in ePub format to produce the book. If authors need assistance with the creation of the manuscript, we are also your contact in the areas of typesetting and layout editing. If necessary, we also provide freelance proofreaders, proofreaders or graphic designers. The final format of the book can be either DIN A5 or B5 (17 x 24 cm). The format information in the instructions for creating the file templates must be adjusted accordingly.
When creating your file, the page margins should be at least 2.0 cm (for DIN A4), depending on the format size. This information refers to a total number of pages up to approx. 200 pages. Please allow for a larger margin as the number of pages increases. The Gutter option should not be checked. When setting up the headers and footers, we recommend a distance of 1.5 cm from the edge of the page.
We recommend a 13pt font with 1.3 line spacing for the text and a 12pt font for notes, quotes, footnotes, etc. This information applies to the creation of the text at a size of DIN A4=100%. However, at least a 12pt font with 1.5 line spacing must be used for the text and a 10pt font for footnotes. The font heights in tables and images should not be less than 6 points (approx. 2 mm).
In principle, the author can determine the font type himself. For longer texts, serif fonts such as: B. Times or Palatino. For texts with illustrations or formulas, sans serif fonts such as Arial or Verdana can also be used.
New parts of the work (foreword, acknowledgments, table of contents, introduction, appendix, index, etc.) must begin on a right-hand (odd) page. Please note that according to most university guidelines for dissertations and habilitations, the first page of the book or the first page with the back must contain the required information (examination date, reporter, etc.). This is followed by the inside page created by the publisher and the imprint. As a rule, the mandatory copies must contain a CV at the end.
We recommend positioning the page numbers on the outside. This means that the even numbers have to be set up on the left and the odd numbers on the right (found in Word under: File/Insert/Page numbers (“outside” option). Another option is to put the page numbers at the bottom center. The page numbers are usually integrated into the header or footer.
We recommend not numbering the front matter and the introduction and numbering the table of contents and, if necessary, a list of figures in Roman numbers up to the beginning of the main text. The Arabic numbering then occurs from the first page of the main text.
When scanning color or grayscale images, you should choose a resolution of at least 300 dpi (optimally 600 dpi). Pure b/w illustrations, i.e. line graphics, should be scanned at 1,200 dpi. All image files used must not be in a format smaller than that intended for printing, as later enlargement will significantly affect the print quality.
Avoid fine lines smaller than 0.3mm (0.9pt), as these lines may break if the text is reduced in size.
