Synthesis of Crystalline Tool Coatings Based on Al2O3 Using High Speed PVD
The increasing demand for productivity in modern manufacturing exposes tools to complex mechanical, thermal, and chemical loads. Oxide-based hard coatings, particularly Al₂O₃, are widely used to enhance the tool lifes in manufacturing processes. However, these coatings are typically produced by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) at high temperatures, which limits their application on temperature-sensitive materials such as hot work steels.

This dissertation investigates crystalline AlCrN/(Al,Cr)₂O₃ hard coating systems synthesized by High Speed Physical Vapor Deposition (HS-PVD). The research focuses on achieving thermally stable coatings with high aluminum content and evaluating their performance for manufacturing processes such as turning operations.

The results demonstrate the potential of HS-PVD deposited oxide coatings as an alternative to conventional CVD Al₂O₃ coatings and highlight their suitability for advanced manufacturing applications involving high thermal loads.
