Die Dissertation befasst sich mit Fragen nach Differenz und Herrschaft bei der wissenschaftlichen Erforschung fremder Kulturen im engeren und weiteren Sinn. Subjektivität und Objektivität werden untersucht unter dem Aspekt der Herrschaft, Differenz und der Gestaltung der daraus entstehenden Spannungsräumen. Betrachtet wird das produktive Potential, das in dem Halten der Spannung entstehen kann. Eine Form des produktiven Potentials kann das Entstehen von Humor sein. Wissenschaftliche Tätigkeit aus der Perspektive des Humors kann struktureller Herrschaft entgegenwirken.
