Theodor Carl Gustav von Leber (1840-1917) veröffentlichte 1871 seine Arbeit über das ungewöhnliche und folgenschwere Krankheitsbild der familiär auftretenden Optikusatrophie. Mit dieser zur Erblindung führenden Krankheit befassten sich bis heute Ophthamologen in aller Welt. Unzählige Publikationen sind seitdem im internationalen Schrifttum erschienen. Aufgabe dieser Schrift ist es, auf die Geschichte der Krankheitsentdeckung und auf die neuesten Erkenntnisse zum Krankheitsbild einzugehen.
