General

Just what does Shaker Verlag do?

We have been involved in the publication of printed and electronic media for the past 25 years. As an academic publishing house, our international clients include over 400 famous research institutions and editors. Our program covers over 20,000 publications, both printed books and electronic publications. We regard our Internet presence as a publication platform for academic media, textbooks and reference books as well as publication series.

What is so special about the corporate philosophy?

We aim to make academic publishing easy and flexible, to accelerate the publication process and achieve an optimum distribution of the works.

Does membership of the publication platform entail any costs or other obligations?

No, the registration itself entails no costs whatsoever. Members are only obliged to abide by the terms of use.

Is data protection respected?

Yes, we at Shaker place great store in the protection of personal data. We only use your personal data for the technical administration of the web sites "shaker.de" and "shaker.eu" and to process your orders or inquiries. They are only used for other purposes with your prior consent or on the basis of a statutory duty or permission. Your data will only be forwarded to other companies or service providers if this is necessary to process your inquiries or orders.

Formatting

How wide should margins be?

When creating files margins should be at least 2.0 cm (for DIN A4) depending on the format size. These figures relate to a total volume of around 200 pages. Take into account a larger margin for a larger number of pages. You should not activate the “Inside margin” option. We recommend a 1.5 cm gap to the margin when configuring headers and footers.

Which character sizes and line spacing should I choose?

We recommend a 13pt font with 1.3-fold line spacing for the text and a 12 pt font for comments, quotations, footnotes, etc. These figures apply when creating a DIN A4=100% text. However, you should use at least a 12pt font with 1.5-fold line spacing and a 10pt font for footnotes. The character height in tables and images should not be less than 6 point (approx. 2 mm).

Which font should I choose?

The author is in principle free to choose his or her own font. Serif fonts such as Times or Palatino are best for longer texts. Sans-serif fonts such as Arial and Verdana can also be used for texts with illustrations or formulae.

What do I have to consider when it comes to the page sequence?

New parts of the work (preface, acknowledgement, table of contents, introduction, appendix, register, etc.) must start on a right-hand (odd numbered) page. Please note that according to most university guidelines for dissertations and habilitations, the first page of the book or first page with rear page must contain the required information (date of examination, reporter, etc.). This is followed by the inside page produced by the publishers and the printer's imprint. The deposit copies should normally contain a curriculum vitae at the end.

Where should the page number be placed?

The page numbers must always alternate between the right (odd numbers) and left (even numbers) side of the page so that they are always on the outside later on a double-page spread. Alternatively, they can of course be placed in the middle of the page.

How should the pages be numbered?

We recommend that you do not number the preliminary matter and header and that the table of contents and any list of illustrations be numbered with Roman numerals up to the start of the book. Arabic numerals then begin on the first page of the main text.

What resolution should any integrated graphics and images have?

When scanning colour or grey-sale illustrations select a resolution of at least 300 dpi (optimum 600 dpi). Purely b/w illustrations, in other words lineart, should be scanned at 1,200 dpi. The image files used should not be subsequently enlarged since this greatly affects the print quality.

What line weight should I use?

Avoid fine lines below 0.3 mm (0.9pt) since these can break off during printing.

Order sheet

Which page numbers should be quoted for the colour pages?

Please quote the printed page numbers and not the (system) page numbers in the document. Since we only have the printed manuscript for checking later on we need the printed page numbers.

What does back margin lettering/spine mean?

This refers to the narrow side of the book that you see when it stands on a shelf. The author's name and a short title are normally printed on the spine. 70 characters/letters should be taken as a reference value. If you want a little longer lettering this can usually be achieved by using a slightly smaller font.

Why do you need to know the “Number of all illustrations”?

This data is needed for our catalogue. It is irrelevant for printing itself. Please quote the total number of all graphics referred to as illustrations. Tables do not count.

What are folded plates?

Folded plates are pages in a book that are larger than the actual book format. These are folded together and can then be unfolded for viewing.

Can I split the delivery?

Yes, that's possible. Simply send us a separate sheet with the extra delivery address and relevant number of copies.

Does the invoice have to be sent to the recipient?

No, we will be happy to split the invoice, e.g. between the author and institute. In this case please send us the exact invoice addresses.

Returning goods

Shaker Verlag GmbH grants you a two-week right of revocation within the scope of statutory regulations. If you return articles purchased from Shaker Verlag within 2 weeks of their receipt you can choose between either a replacement delivery or reimbursement of the purchase price. Contracts for the delivery of goods whose nature make them unsuitable for a return (e.g. e-books, downloads, etc.) and contract for deliveries of audio and video recordings or software are excluded from this right of revocation if the seals of the data carriers have been broken by the customer. The statutory exceptions according to § 312 paragraph 4 BGB (German Civil Code) apply for all other cases. If the article you return is damaged you may have to pay compensation for lost value.

You have to pay the costs of returning articles up to an order value of EUR 40.00 unless their return is justified, for example an incorrect delivery or if the goods are damaged.

Author's contract & fee

When is the publishing contract concluded?

The contract can either be concluded during the preparation and creation of the manuscript or at the latest in connection with the registration of the publication and uploading of the print file.

Can I still exercise my rights over the work after conclusion of the publishing contract?

Yes, authors and editors can publish parts of the work in trade magazines, anthologies, etc.

Do the rights for all languages have to be transferred in the contract?

No, you can also transfer only those rights for the current language of the book to us and keep your rights for any further languages.

How high is the print run?

When publishing dissertations we produce a minimum of 150 copies for book stores irrespective of how many author's copies are ordered.

How do I find out how many books have been sold and how often will my fee be paid?

The latest sales and turnover figures are provided annually in your account. The fee is paid annually.

Print file

Which file formats are allowed as a print file?

Please send us your manuscript as a PDF or PostScript file. These formats guarantee the best printing results and rule out any errors in formatting. A PDF file is also suitable for an online publication.

How can I make sure that my fonts and formatting will be transferred exactly to my print file (PDF)?

All fonts should always be embedded when you create the PDF file. You will find a corresponding option under settings in most PDF creation programs. To check the success you should open the PDF file on a second computer that does not have to have all the fonts used. If the document is shown correctly on this computer there should be no problems with the fonts and formatting.

How can I check my print file (PDF) before uploading?

You can download the free Adobe Reader from www.adobe.com to check your PDF file, in particular to check the page formatting.

Publication process

How does the publication process go?

As soon as you can estimate when your manuscript will be ready for submission you can place an order for its publication. To do so, send the book's bibliographic data to your account and upload the passed for press PDF file. In this connection you can also decide on a standard cover, send us your own design or commission an individual book cover. Our subsequent processing includes the ISBN registration and production of the specimen prints of the book which you will then be sent. The book can be released for publication as soon as you have checked the specimen prints. As of then the book can be ordered from us and a few weeks later via Internet booksellers and book shops.

Can corrections still be made after the first specimen print?

Yes, we understand that most manuscripts will be corrected orthographically or their design modified at this phase. The first two specimen prints are thus free of charge. However, any further replacements of print files or corrections to the book cover will then entail costs.

Book design

Can I have my book printed in sizes other than the standard formats?

Yes, books can also be printed in other formats. As long your wishes do not lead to significantly higher costs of production we will do everything we can to treat your special format like a comparable standard format.

Can I choose paper other than that offered for my book?

Yes, because we believe that it is important that your publication be individual. Tell us what you have in mind.

What types of cover are available for books?

You can choose from soft covers, hard covers, booklet (stitched brochure) and wire-O-binding (spiral binding). Soft covers and hard covers can have either an adhesive binding or thread-stitching.

Can my book also include coloured pages?

Naturally, the manuscript can contain as many coloured pages as you wish, or even be completely in colour.

Can my book also include folded plates?

Yes, folded plates with illustrations or other images are incorporated in the book block and can then be unfolded and folded back in again by the reader.

Can I also enclose a CD ROM / DVD in a sleeve with my book?

Yes, the CD-ROM / DVD is inserted in a paper sleeve and this is then stuck to the inside rear cover. The CD-ROM or DVD is then a firm part of the book.

When does thread-stitching make sense for my hardcover book?

Thread-stitching is recommended if you are planning a valuable and particularly long-lasting edition that may cost a little more to produce.

Can my soft cover also have fold-in covers on the sides?

Yes, this is no problem whatsoever. We regard this so-called English brochure as an element of the traditional art of printing which we want to uphold. Which is why we are happy to offer this option. Simply produce the book cover with flaps or commission our graphic department with this work.

CD/DVD-ROM

How much data can my publication contain?

A CD-ROM has a maximum storage capacity of 700 MB. If your publication contains more data you can opt for a DVD with a maximum storage capacity of 4.5 GB.

How is a CD-ROM / DVD published?

We will copy and label your master CD/DVD. We will send you a draft label for permission to print.

What options do I have as regards the art design and packaging?

If your CD-ROM / DVD is a supplement to a book publication it will be inserted into a paper sleeve that is normally stuck into the back of the book. So-called QuickFlips are available for purely CD-ROM / DVD publications. You can design the label of these two options together with our graphic department. A further option we can offer is a CD / DVD publication in a jewel case. In this case the inlay (rear of the CD case) and a booklet can also be designed in addition to the label.

Will my electronic publication have an ISBN too?

In the case of a purely CD /DVD publication we can give this an ISBN on request, just like a book publication. CD-ROMs / DVDs enclosed with books bear the ISBN of the book on the label and cannot be ordered separately.

Online publishing

How are online publications sold?

Online publications are distributed as downloads via our Internet bookshop. Before a reader can download the file they have to activate an electronic method of payment (PayPal or Creditcard). This ensures that the copies sold are in fact paid for.

Which file formats are suitable for an online publication?

If you want to publish over the Internet the file should have a PDF format.

How high is the fee for an online publication?

The fee for an online publication is 50% of the net sales price. The net sales price corresponds to the sale price minus VAT and minus the transaction charges for the Internet payment service (PayPal, Credicard).

Cover design

How should I send you my images and graphics?

Coloured illustrations (e.g. photos and drawings) should have a resolution of at least 300 dpi (600 dpi is better) and preferably be saved as tiff or jpg files.

Grey-scale illustrations should have a resolution of at least 350 dpi and preferably be saved as tiff files.

Line drawings in a Bitmap format (bmp) (illustrations consisting of black lines or areas with no grey scales) must have a resolution of at least 600 dpi, though 1200 dpi is better. Vector graphics should preferably be created in a vector/drawing program and not in an image/pixel program. A ps or eps file format is also possible as well as a printable PDF file.

If using professional layout programs such as InDesign we would ask you not to set any colour separation.

How should I supply my self-designed cover files?

BPlease send us the files as a printable PDF files with 3mm trim all round and embed all fonts. Alternatively, you can also send us open files that have been created in a professional artwork or layout program (such as InDesign) by arrangement with our graphic department.
