SPN - Get-ups for technical publications

Shaker Publishing
=================================================
Dear Author,
On completion of academic or scientific
investigations and research, the question
often arises as to how the results should
be published.
If the book is to be published by a
publishing house a wide variety of
different get-ups are available.
For example, the format, type of binding or
cover design can vary depending on the type
of work. Apart from the topic, audience or
representative aspects, however, financial
considerations may also play an important role.
This is why we would like to present the
various get-ups for a technical publication
in today's newsletter.
Yours sincerely
Shaker Publishing, Aachen

=================================================
1. Formats
=================================================
The majority of academic and scientific works are
initially written in an A4 format. Nevertheless,
they are rarely published in this large and thus
somewhat cumbersome format. An A4 format
(29.7 x 21.0 cm) is only chosen if books contain
several elements or illustrations (such as tables,
plans, maps, etc.) that cannot be scaled down any
further. But if the book only contains a few
illustrations that cannot be adapted to a smaller
format, fold-out plates can also be bound in the
book.
If the illustrations are even larger they can also
be inserted into a pocket at the end of the book.
The B5 format (25.0 x 17.6 cm) is a popular format
for monographs and conference proceedings. Since
these are normally printed on 70 x 100 paper for
cost reasons, the trimmed final format is often
24.0 x 17.0 cm.
Dissertations and professorial dissertations are
generally published in an A5 format (21.0 x 14.8 cm).
This is also the most inexpensive type of publication.
=================================================
2. Cover design
=================================================
The cover design gives readers a first impression
of the work. Care should thus be taken to choose
an attractive layout.
The easiest and at the same time cheapest variant is
a black print on a white or single-colour boxboard.
More complicated layouts are possible by using
individual special colours, right through to colour
process printing. This printing method can also be
used for coloured photos on the cover.
To prevent the printed ink from rubbing off during
later use the books are provided with a protective
surface finish. You can choose between a structured,
gloss or matt surface finish.
=================================================
3. Types of binding
=================================================
Most scientific works are published as paperbacks.
The separate sheets are placed on top of each
other and cut into single pages at the spine,
glued and at the same time cased in a cover. The
book is then cut on three sides. A paperback
normally has a flexible cover.
A more complicated type of binding is the hardcover.
This is the term used to described printed works
where the book block is firmly connected to a cover.
A hardcover is the most durable but also the most
expensive type of binding. Various covering
materials can be used such as durable papers,
fabrics or leather.
Hardcover books can be made with a high-quality
thread-stitching (the most durable and expensive
design) or as a pasted design.
=================================================
4. Adhesive binding and thread-stitching
=================================================
The type of binding is an important cost factor
for the finishing work. It is also decisive for
the durability of the book.
With adhesive binding the printed sheets are laid
on top of each other and cut into single pages
along the spine, roughened, glued and then placed
into the cover and pressed together. This method
is used to produce all types of brochures and, to
save costs, hardcovers too.
Thread-stitching is the "classic" type of binding.
It is both the most durable and most expensive
type of binding and is mainly used for hardcovers,
and more rarely for brochures.
The binding thread is pulled through the middle of
the printed sheet with several stitches and sewn
on the next sheet. The spine is then pasted with
glue and cased in the cover.
=================================================
5. Types of paper
=================================================
Finally, the choice of paper can also be important
for the book's appearance. Academic and scientific
publications are normally printed on white, 80 g/m2
offset paper. Yellowish and heavy book paper is
suitable for works of fiction and art paper is
often used for coloured pages.
=================================================
6. Multimedia supplements
=================================================
Some academic and scientific works contain elements
that cannot be shown in a printed book, or only at
great cost. Enclosed electronic data carriers such
as a CD-ROM or DVD are a good way of supplementing
the content of a book with multimedia elements at
low cost.
A typical field of application for including
electronic media are textbooks or works with a
didactic focus. The learning success of computer-based
learning and teaching software can be improved by
multimedia effects and examples (texts, graphics,
audio and video sequences) that help make the content
more understandable.
A CD-ROM or DVD can be enclosed with works that
contain extensive source materials - e.g. historical
or philological works. The high storage capacity of
the digital data carrier is used for this source
material, thus helping keep the total number of
pages in the book low. This is both a practical
and economical solution. The same applies for all
works with a very extensive register or index,
document appendices, map material, etc.
Digital data carrier supplements may also contain
explanatory visual material, particularly in
scientific or technical works, that cannot be
reproduced in this form in the book itself. These
can be animated images, video sequences or 3D
models.
Similarly, audio elements can only be realised
with an electronic supplement. These may be
practical supplements to works from all disciplines,
be this in the form of spoken texts, interviews,
noise, linguistic, film or music examples.
